Case studies - Katie Atkinson

Katie Atkinson is a young fashion designer. Having worked for Monsoon, she is now off to Sweden to work for H&M. Here she talks to Shine about how she got into fashion.

When you were at school did you know what you wanted to do for a career?
I knew I wanted to stay within fashion or textiles because it was the only subject that excited me and I wanted to work hard on.

What were you doing before your talent became your job?
I've always stuck to fashion and went straight into it from education... plus working in a few bars and Nando's to support my studies.

How did you get your break?
On the Monsoon placement graduate scheme.

Why do you think it is important to support young people's talents?
Because if you don't encourage children in a subject or talent that they enjoy then they may not reach their full potential.

Who in your life has helped you to Shine? Who inspires you?

My dad helped me. He was always encouraging me in whatever I chose to do and would always help me if I was stuck with anything. If it weren’t for him I would probably be really shy and a wuss.

What other talents do you have?
I think I have very good communication skills which is very important in any business.

How do you think schools can help young people to develop their ideas and have the confidence to take them forward? I think that generally encouragement is the main thing. Or just taking an interest.

What do you think about the Shine festival of talent? Is it something you would have engaged with if it was available while you were at school?
I probably would have done. It’s good to start teaching children about making contacts, with other students and industry etc.

What advice would you give to young people taking part in Shine?
Don't be afraid to take part!
