Dr Tom Shakespeare

What was the most valuable lesson you learnt from your school days?
Don’t be afraid to be different.

How did you get your break?
I did what I thought was most interesting, and it gave me a reputation which made other people want to support me.

Why do you think it’s important to support young people's talents?
Because young people are the future, because everyone is good at something, if only we could find that thing, because knowing you have talent helps you feel happier and more fulfilled.

Who in your life has helped you to Shine?
Julia Darling was a writer who inspired and supported me. NESTA was a funder that took a risk with me.

What other talents do you have?
I can juggle and eat fire.

How do you think schools can help young people to develop their ideas and have the confidence to take them forward?
Give them space and time and believe in their potential. Let them make mistakes.

What advice would you give to young people taking part in Shine?
Enjoy the experience and don’t be afraid to look an idiot. All the best people started out looking like fools. Later they turned out to be right.
